The Game of Thrones Prequel series, House of the Dragon, on HBO, delivers huge audiences. according to diverseThe show now averages 29 million viewers per episode in the United States. This calculates viewership across cable TV, HBO Max, and all the other places where people can watch HBO content.
Forbes reported The original Game of Thrones had 9.3 million viewers per episode in 2011 for its first season. More importantly, it was a decade ago when there was no HBO Max. George R. R. Martin has published some of the A Song of Ice and Fire books, but the fantasy series in general was new to many and didn’t have the cultural significance it has now thanks to the Game of Thrones show.
Game of Thrones finished its run with an average of 44 million viewers per episode in its eighth and final season in 2019. The Spinoff series, House of the Dragon, was never expected to perform as well as the main show. This is something series star Matt Smith has been talking about previously.
Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen on House of the Dragon, said Game of Thrones has a “cultural imprint” and has become a “phenomenon.” He went on to say that it would be “impossible to replicate or recreate” that.
“All we can do is focus on the show we’re trying to deliver, and while it belongs in the same world, we hope it evolves and becomes something of its own,” Smith said. “This focuses on a narrower group of people, and Thrones was immediately much broader in terms of the story. This feels like a family drama. It wouldn’t recreate the levels of success that Thrones had because he couldn’t – it was a completely original moment. But we tried to create something that seemed fun in a way Similar, but hopefully will take on a different identity.”
House of the Dragon premiered on August 21 and is now in the middle of its first season. The next episode, which will air on September 25, will see the leap for 10 years, with new cast coming in to play Rainera and Aliscent.
HBO has ordered the second season of House of the Dragon, but we don’t know yet when it will air.
The show now competes with another high-profile fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power from Amazon Studios, which garnered 25 million viewers for its first episodes.
