House of the Dragon is exactly the kind of megahit HBO hoped it would be, riding a nostalgia for Game of Thrones, when the series was still that good. And the numbers reflect that.

according to diverseHouse of the Dragon’s viewership continues slowly but surely, and now, the show averages 29 million viewers in its first five episodes. What does that mean in context?

Those are brutal numbers for any excellent cable show, and stacked against previous series, that 29 million is more than triple the 9.3 million viewers HBO said the first season of Game of Thrones averaged when it aired. Of course, that was a decade ago, with fewer places to watch, and the series being stocked. But even with that in mind, 29 million isn’t far from the 46 million average for Game of Thrones in Season 8, its final season.

Here’s how Game of Thrones has progressed over time with average viewership:

  • Season 1 – 9.3 million
  • Season 2 – 11.6 million
  • Season 3 – 14.4 million
  • Season 4 – 19.1 million
  • Season 5 – 20.2 million
  • Season 6 – 25.7 million
  • Season 7 – 32.8 million
  • Season 8 – 46 million

So, House of the Dragon got a free pass to skip ahead all the way down to Season 7 numbers from Game of Thrones, obviously boosted by being in the same universe and by the deep hunger of fans who want more, namely, want the world to be fun and good again. , unlike the past few non-adapted seasons of the main show.

We don’t know exactly what HBO has planned for House of the Dragon, though there is likely to be at least one additional season. There is a definite and very difficult ending to this cast of characters from the source material, but there has also been some talk of the show turning into the Targaryen anthology, following the Mad Family through other time points, in other centuries.

And it’s clear that HBO still has plenty of spin-offs in the works, though which one makes it to final production is still unclear, as HBO has shown a willingness to kill anything they don’t believe in, like the old Valyria show that was thrown out before it was over. The Dragon House is in its place. Most intriguing is the concept of a supplemental show led by Jon Snow, introduced by Kit Harrington himself, as this is the only proposed project that will actually happen after the original series has run.

But yes, House of the Dragon’s high viewership here will likely mean more seasons and more spin-offs for Thrones. stay tuned
