Shmullations He translated two interviews from 2002 about the development of the then-anticipated Super Mario Sunshine, and both revealed some interesting details about how the FLUDD game mechanic, Mario’s short-sleeved look (thanks, time extension!).

The first of these interviews appeared on the Nintendo Dream between Mario creator, producer Shigeru Miyamoto, Sunshine producer Takashi Tezuka, and game director Yoshiaki Koizumi. The trio discuss the trials and tribulations of bringing the unique Mario game onto the GameCube, a system that was still relatively new at the time of the game’s development.

Director Koizumi drew inspiration from the GameCube’s “L” and “R” buttons — pressing them to remind him of “the water pistols I played with as a kid,” likely the source of FLUDD. And according to Miyamoto, FLUDD caused Nintendo to worry a bit:

“There was a very serious discussion in Nintendo about the FLUDD water tank. Was it really appropriate to have Mario use gadgets and items like that? I mean, it was fine for Luigi, so… (laughs)”

We agree, Miyamoto! If Luigi can use the Poltergust 3000, then Mario can use FLUDD! Another amusing Super Mario Sunshine anecdote revolves around Mario’s new look – Miyamoto says the team “tried to give him a tank top”, making the character not look like Mario at all! Tezuka generally had reservations about changing Mario’s design too often but eventually agreed to give him shorter sleeves.

Koizumi wanted FLUDD to pave the way for “an eccentric and unusual act of Mario,” and stated during the interview:

“Miyamoto actually told us that he wanted the GameCube Mario to be something wild. However, when I showed him a pump-like game, I could tell he was worried about what was going on. In the end, though, the image of Mario doing his job, which is Water sprinkles everywhere – it’s so wild, isn’t it?”

FLUDD definitely made for a completely different Mario experience with Sunshine, which is often identified by fans of the Italian plumber. However, the game has a special place in the hearts of many people.

In the second interview, its source GSLA . Archive (And found about halfway through the page), the trio also revealed that they tried to give Mario a Hawaiian shirt — which we eventually got in Super Mario Odyssey.

But there are more details about the FLUDD tank in this interview, including the fact that there were originally ten different nozzles for the device! Koizumi reveals that many of these pieces were cut because discovering and using multiple items was more like a file Zelda Game:

“Mario Sunshine has the hover, rocket and turbo nozzles, but originally there were 10 different ones. We kept adding them whenever we thought of a different situation they could be used in. Eventually we narrowed it down to just those three though. The reason for that, is that we We felt that the whole gameplay of finding and using so many different items in the right situation was more appropriate for Zelda.”

The concept of cleaning up in Mario might have seemed a little strange, and the team was wary that this might not have been appealing, which is why the “sticky” looks “beautiful” – and some even compared some to the “chocolate sauce look”.

As weird as FLUDD is, it easily became the most famous part of Super Mario Sunshine, even appearing in Super Smash Bros. Series as part of Mario Attacks. This is still the perfect summer Mario game, and if you have a switch, you can at least try this weird and wonderful adventure with Super Mario 3D All-Stars (if you’re lucky to get a copy!).
