PlayStation Indies president Shuhei Yoshida has revealed more details about Sony’s approach to first-party gaming and its strategy towards releasing its biggest titles through PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscription services.

According to Yoshida in his interview with gaming industrySony still believes in the “premium version of the game at launch” and that when these games are made available on the new PS Plus tiers, the goal is to give these titles an extra revenue stream later in their life cycles. There are exceptions to the rule, such as the first-day launch of multiplayer-focused games like Rocket League and Fall Guys, so they can quickly build an online audience.

“In the same way, we believe in the premium version of the game at launch and six months, three months, or three years later, when game sales drop, the inclusion in this service, PS Plus Extra, can help introduce these games to broader new audiences,” Yoshida explained.

The former PlayStation chief added that when implemented correctly, the opportunity to build positive word of mouth for the game can help increase audiences, especially when this title has new DLC content or an upcoming sequel. “We encourage publishers to take advantage of these services to manage the lifecycle of each title,” Yoshida said.

Yoshida went on to state that Sony’s renewed subscription service is still “beta” for the company, although she considered the Stray’s day and date launch a good example of what its service can offer. The PS Plus library has been expanding since its fix earlier this year, having added Deathloop, Spiritfarer, and several other titles to its Extra and Premium libraries this month.
