The Borderlands spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was a “big victory” that beat sales and critical expectations, according to Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford.

Speaking through the studio owner Embracer annual general meeting todayas I mentioned before VGC“Gearbox Software had a huge victory” with Wonderlands, which became a “new franchise” for the studio, Pitchford said. Work is now underway on future “experiments” for the Wonderlands brand.

“The Wonders dashed all of our target expectations, both monetary and commercial, and I am pleased to report that in addition to the significant financial rewards from this victory that will come our way in the coming quarters, we have established a firm foothold,” he said. “We now clearly have a new franchise on our hands, with future experiences already in development at Gearbox.”

Unlike the main Borderlands series, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a highly fantasy game, which Gearbox has been trying to make since the Lord of the Rings games offered many years ago. It stars Tiny Tina, voiced by Ashley Burch, with a supporting cast that includes Will Arnett, Andy Samberg, and Wanda Sykes.

Here at GameSpot, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands review scores the fantasy game with an average of 7/10. Reviewer Darryn Bonthuys said it doesn’t reinvent the Borderlands wheel but is a competent first-person shooter, albeit “fun but forgettable.”

Gearbox was acquired by Embracer in 2021 for more than $1 billion. As part of the acquisition, Gearbox is getting money, or “rocket fuel,” as the company said, for “Gearbox’s powerful creative engine.” Despite the acquisition, 2K Games continues to publish the Borderlands series, including Wonderlands.
