Donald Trump says he can declassify top-secret government documents “just by thinking about it”.
In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, the former president reiterated his claim that dozens of classified and classified papers seized at this Mar-a-Lago home have been declassified.
Asked what the process would be needed to do this, Mr. Trump said: “It doesn’t have to be a process, as I understand it. If you’re president of the United States, you can waive the designation, even by thinking about it.”
The question of whether the papers found at his Florida home were kept secret — and how much this affected whether or not he was allowed to obtain them — has been debated since the August 8 search.
While Mr. Trump has repeatedly claimed that papers have been declassified, his lawyers have been reluctant to make the same claims in court.
